In 1974 Piero Palladino acquired the Azienda Vinicola Palladino, entrusting the management to his cousin Maurilio. Today you’ll find Maurilio’s grandaughter Veronica and her husband Alessandro, Piero’s granddaughter Margherita, and Maurilio’s cousin Mauro at the helm. Palladino’s loyalty to tradition is no accident. The family originate from Guarene and during his youth, Piero studied at the Instituto Enologico in Alba. He was then employed in Biella as a winemaker though never forgot Alba and the Langhe. Not even his industriousness in setting up business interests in fields such as textiles could dampen Piero’s passion for wine.
The Cantina Palladino is located in the old Cappellano winery in Serralunga d’Alba, a comune famed for its complex and age-worthy Barolos. Palladino’s 30 hectares are parcelled in the San Bernardo, Ornato, Parafada, Gabutti and Serra vineyards. Parafada is a spot envied for its exposure to the sun and shelter from the wind. On top of these near-perfect conditions, the age of Palladino’s vines, averaging 25 years, generates wines of great depth and concentration. The grapes that grow here are extremely elegant and refined, yet endowed with vigour and vibrancy. Antonio Galloni classifies Parafada as an “Outstanding vineyard” and its Barolos as “relatively forward, supple and immediate within the context of Serralunga, with mid-weight structures and firm but not overly imposing tannins.”
It is near the ridge that divides Serralunga d’Alba that we find Ornato, another “Outstanding vineyard” for Antonio Galloni. Here the 30-year-old vines produce a wine that shows a distinct hint of minerality with good structure and power without losing its elegance or harmony. In the words of Galloni – Ornato “offer[s] a very typical expression of Serralunga, with firm, muscular tannins that lend to support a host of ferrous, mineral and dark fruit nuances.”
San Bernardo has the honour of producing Palladino’s signature Riserva. “The Riserva is produced only in the best vintages after two years of ageing in big barrels” Maurilio Palladino tells us “the wine is then tasted and analysed. If the wine appears to be able to bear an extra 3 years ageing in wood and has the structure to have a long life we produce the Riserva otherwise the San Bernardo ends up in the Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba.”
Palladino are renown for stellar Barolo’s made in their signature open, approachable and utterly elegant house style. What is less well known is that from their vineyards in Serralunga they also produce a superb Barbera, the Barbera d’Alba Superiore Bricco delle Olive, that is locally considered as one of the finest in Piedmont.
