Cascina Val del Prete is a certified organic winery located in Priocca, just 20 km from Barolo. In 1977, after years of sharecropping, at a time when everyone was abandoning the countryside, Bartolomeo Roagna and his wife Carolina bought “Cascina Val del Prete”, a stunning Priocca estate.
The family started to plant the land with fruit trees, grains and some vineyards of Nebbiolo and Barbera. In 1995 their son Mario Roagna and his wife Maria Carla took over the business and decided to focus exclusively on viticulture and the production of high-quality wines.
Today Mario and his son Giovanni are doing something unique and special. Organic and biodynamic cultivation, regular experimentation with the winemaking process; all underpinned by the long-standing and exceptional vineyards which surround the cantina. Mario does not care much for DOCG conventions and technicalities, preferring to adhere to generations of family winemaking tradition. Mario’s son Giovanni, on the other hand, enjoys experimenting with new ideas and winemaking techniques. These two styles fuse together at Cascina Val Del Prete to create unique self-declared “hippy wines”, considered by many “cognoscenti” as some of the finest organic quality to price ratio wines in all of Piedmont.
