Giovanni Almondo, Montà (Roero)

Giovanni Almondo, Montà (Roero)

Antonio Galloni describes Giovanni Almondo as “one of the very finest producers in the Roero” and “one of Piedmont’s hidden gems”. Famed locally as a “go to” producer for their whites, it would be a mistake to ignore Almondo’s Nebbiolos.

Parallels have often been drawn between Piedmont and Burgundy and nowhere is this more apparent than at Giovanni Almondo. Federico Almondo who is central to the viticulture alongside his father Domenico, spent time working at Nicolas Potel. Tasting the wines from barrel in their impressive Montà cellar, you need to remind yourself that you are not in Burgundy. The whites embody the pursuit of aroma, acidity and minerality.

The jewel in the crown is the ‘Le Rive’ Arneis of which, only 1,000 bottles are typically produced each year. The Bric Valdiana and Roero Riserva positively blur the lines between Nebbiolo and pinot noir and the Roero and Langhe bottlings offer some of the best value entry points into Nebbiolo you will find.
